Getting Creative with Haywards Pickles

Posted on 07 July 2016 by Chris Ford

In 1868 the Haywards Brothers of Montford Place, Kennington, formed a company making pickles, sauces, vinegar and cordials. In my house growing up Hawwards onions and Piccalilli were religiously rolled out at Christmas

While a staple at festive times for a lot of families Haywards are trying to change that with the idea that their pickled products can be used in lots of different inventive ways to enhance and create dishes we may not have considered before, with this in mind they invited myself and a few fellow blogger along to a kitchen to show off some of the versatile ways the products can be used.

We were shown six different dishes on the night but I think my favourite and most inventive was the Homemade Indian Turkey Piccalilli Curry the demo of which I captured for you on film below

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tbsp mild curry powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds, ground (optional)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 320g chopped turkey breast
  • 400g coconut milk tin
  • 100g Haywards Medium & Tangy Piccalilli
  • Fresh coriander and steamed rice, to serve

  • Method
  • In a food processor, combine the garlic, curry powder, cumin seeds, onion and oil.
  • Place a saucepan on the heat and add the mixture. Cook for 2 mins, then add the turkey, cooking until sealed.
  • Add the coconut milk and the piccalilli and bring to the boil.
  • Simmer for 10 mins and serve with coriander and steamed rice.

All of the new recipes were delicious inventive and certainly made me think of pickled veg as more than just a garnish or something to have a Christmas and I think it’s a testament to how good the curry is that I have already made it twice since our demo a few weeks ago, it really is that good!

David Beckham Classic Blue

Posted on 13 October 2014 by Eddie

When this arrived I was intrigued what a scent crafted by a world class sportsman would smell like. I excitedly opened the bottle and had a couple of sprays. The smell reminded me of a little of Coolwater, but with some other notes added. I used to wear Coolwater back in my youth so this brought back some memories.

With further research I discovered that this latest scent by David Beckham is described as grapefruit and juicy pineapple fused with fresh violet leaves to open the fragrance. The heart reveals an aromatic blend of clary sage and geranium, with green apple accord. Finally, warm cashmeran, patchouli and magnetic moss give to the fragrance its elegant signature. I’m not sure how many of us could pick those out, or even knew what half of those smelt like, but together they make a nice subtle scent that in my opinion is suitable as an everyday fragrance.

I’ve been wearing this as my every day scent since it arrived and the smell has lingered for a pleasing length of time and whilst being noticeable isn’t over powering, I will continue to wear this and will look at some other of his products when I’m in shops selling them.

My only complaint is that since wearing it I’ve not had a posh world class girl band member ask me out, but I’ve got plenty left in the bottle so I’ll keep my hopes up.

Girlfriend comment: I am not a fan of David Beckham, but I am a fan of the after shave. It makes him smell pretty, obviously in a ruggedly handsome way. Hummmmm, if he can find a world class band member that would wash his socks and put up with his snoring he is welcome to go look!!!

Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Noir

Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Noir

Posted on 23 July 2013 by Eddie

The box of this new scent tells us “The iconic L.12.12 polo shirt is now captured in a fragrance collection”. I’m not sure I’d want a tennis t-shirt that I wear distilled into a bottle, so I have to guess that they are saying that this will be a timeless classic. On opening and spraying this new scent from Lacoste my first impression is that it is a dark and manly scent with sweet notes. Lacoste says that there are notes of watermelon, pineapple, lavender, basil and dark chocolate to name some of these.

I don’t have a refined nose able to pick out these individual scents, but I do know what my olfactory system likes and I like L12.12 Noir.

I’d say this is a masculine scent that reminds me of evenings out, but lively enough to wear all day. Personally I don’t often wear a scent during the day beyond an antiperspirant, but this bottle has inspired me to start. It is not overpowering, but still strong enough to enjoy for hours. From now on I’ll reach for this bottle for business meetings and special occasions.

The obligatory “girlfriend comment”: A pleasant and masculine scent that is subtle and not overpowering. It is fresh enough not to remind me of something that my dad would wear.

In conclusion: if you wear a suit to work I’d say this could be an every-day scent, but if not it would be a great evening scent that “encompasses a warm summer evening” for nights out.

Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Noir is available from www.thefragranceshop.co.uk  starting at £27.50

Solo by Loewe

Posted on 16 April 2013 by Chris Ford

I’m often sent aftershaves to try in the hope I will write something about them and too often I just cant as they just don’t do much for me, you see I know what I like and tend to stick with it and that means I mostly wear Issey Miyake L’eau D’issey Pour Homme, its a classic scent that I’m often  complimented on.

So I wasn’t sure what to think when I was sent Loewe’s Solo fragrance, for one I admit I havent heard of the brand before although it turns out they have been around since  1846 when a group of craftsmen opened a leather goods workshop
in central Madrid. Within a few years they had established themselves as one of the best names in leather goods and fashion, a trait they still hold dear to this day.
Loewe is now well established in high end fashion with Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani and Laura Biagiotti all having contributed to the Loewe collections.

Loewe launched their first scent in 1985, and has since become a market leader in Spain.

Upon the first spray of the scent I was pleasantly surprised, it actually reminds me alot of my beloved Issey Miyake with its citrus tones  and spiciness but Loewe also have their own unmistakable scent here which they make their own. I’m not the best at describing scents but I know what I like and I like Solo. I wore it out yesterday to meet a friend for lunch and no less than three people enquired as to what I was wearing which is a very good sign indeed!

You can pick up Loewe Solo on the high street at  The Fragrance Shop or visit www.thefragranceshop.co.uk

Zippo – The Fragrance!

Posted on 29 March 2012 by Chris Ford

the Zippo lighter is a iconic item,  the look and the sound of the click when you open it ooze cool and make me think for just a moment  I’m Steve McQueen (Yeah right!)   well now you can get the coolness of the Zippo lighter in the form of a men’s fragrance  – and guess what?  it even makes the ping sound when you open it!!!!

In fact the case is exactly like a classic Zippo lighter except of course instead of lighter fluid it contains a lovely citrus based scent,  I’m sure Steve would approve.

Zippo Original is available now in 50ml EDT for £27.00 exclusively from The Fragrance Shop

It opens with fresh notes of Marjoram, Cardamon and Mandarin,  you are hit by a  warm spice of  Saffron and a modern touch of Pimento. Whilst the woody, smoky dry down of Patchouli and Vetiver feels like a real mans scent.

I can imagine this is the sort of scent Don Drapper from Mad Men would splash onto this neck before a night out in a high end supper club, this is one to impress and be noticed.

Moschino Forever – A Timeless Fragrance

Moschino Forever – A Timeless Fragrance

Posted on 25 April 2011 by Chris Ford

Recently I was lucky enough to be sent the new men’s fragrance Moschino Forever  by Moschino and heres what I thought.

Moschino fashion is known for reinterpreting classics with elegance and irony and I guess the same can be said for this fragrance.  A sharp citrus spice fragrance, mellowed with sandalwood, musk and kumquat. This is perfect for evening wear. Moschino Forever  is a fresh, vibrant and elegant scent. A timeless fragrance with a very masculine signature with a vibrating freshness of yuzu meets sandal I can see this becoming a hallmark of unique elegance in the world of men’s fragrances. A powerful yet balanced scent with woody, spicy and citrus. This success is due to its freshness, along with a very masculine signature and affirmed character. A perfect balance of serenity and fused notes.

The bottle has a striking  silver cap that  showcases the logo that reflects the iconic details of Moschino Fashion. The design of the bottle is geometric and linear. The glass is absolutely transparent, the juice bold in colour, there is no doubt this is a mans fragrance.

The fragrance completes itself with an extension line that includes four grooming products a
After shave lotion, After shave balm, Deodorant stick and a refreshing Bath and shower gel all  lightly scented with the Moschino Forever fragrance.

EDT 30ml £27.00, EDT 50ml £37.00, EDT 100ml £49.00
Shower Gel 200ml £21.00, Aftershave Balm 100ml £27.00, Deodorant Stick 75g £18.00
