The Murdock London team were speaking at the Society of Master Craftsmen evening, hosted by premium Belgium beer brand, Affligem ahead of their participation in London Restaurant Festival.’ In this guest post the Murdock team give us all some grooming advice for the changing seasons.
Wind, cold air and rain replace the sunshine in providing potential harm to the more delicate skin on your face as we get into the winter months. Apply a good, pumice based scrub to your skin once or twice a week, using your finger tips to focus on your t zone and any especially dry areas of your skin to remove dead skin.
Twice a day, morning and night, take a light face moisturiser and massage it onto your skin with light pressure in ‘outwards’ circular motions, don’t forget the areas around the nose, the corners of the mouth and between the eyebrows as these tend to be extra dry. The sweat glands on your skin face downwards, a common mistake is to just rub downwards on to your skin, this actually stops the skin from absorbing the moisturiser.
For the rest of your skin use a richer oil, based on nut oils to hydrate, or ginseng to repair, to keep your whole body feeling soft and nurtured. Murdock London’s Exfoliating Facial Scrub, Hydrating Facial Moisturiser and Avalon Body Lotion are the products to look too.
Another symptom of the colder, wetter months is hair becoming frizzy due to humidity or wind. Tame the frizz by using a conditioner after your shampoo. Murdock’s Quince and Oakmoss conditioner uses vitamin E and wheat proteins to keep hair looking healthy and frizz-free.
As the sun sets on London’s summer, longer beards are set to return, and they face the same threat from frizz as your hair does. Avoid using any products made for your head hair on your beard: nearly all of them are formulated to clean your hair and are too acidic for the hair and skin on your face. They will leave both feeling dried out and fragile. Fear not, as shampoos and conditioners for your beard are available to tame any frizz. Murdock’s Beard Shampoo has an anti-static agent to stop frizz, its PH neutral to your skin and based on coconut oil, so will leave both beard and face feeling nurtured as well as fresh.
Whilst waiting for your nan to knit you more mittens for Christmas you need to take good care of the skin on your hands, as the cold weather can cause cracks and roughness. Carry a rich, buttery moisturiser like Murdock’s Restoring Hand Healer at all times, and use whenever needed. Shea and Cocoa butters make this a formidable moisturiser to stand up to the harsh London winter. Whilst trimming finger nails rub a moisturiser into your cuticles to soften them and make it easier to push them back and remove them.
As the seasons change, so should a gentleman’s fragrance. Lighter, more citrus based colognes should be used for crisper, brighter days, while evenings should be reserved for woody, spicier fragrances. Murdock’s Avalon cologne, with top notes of cold-pressed Sicilian bergamot, is perfect for a crisp autumn morning, whilst our Napier cologne with its base note of oakmoss is a delicious fragrance for the evening.

Ever cracked your smart phone screen or seen someone with a cracked screen bravely soldiering on because of the fortune to replace it? I’ve cracked mine before and not only is it annoying, even if your device does continue to work it’s now more exposed to the elements, meaning it won’t be long for this world.


Second question – have you ever dropped your phone in the toilet? I have! I have also, in a sheer moment of madness, walked into the sea with my shiny new phone in my swimming shorts pocket. No amount of the fabled rice method could save it and it joined my other devices in the phone graveyard.

Why am I telling you all this? Well CAT, known for their hard wearing boots and heavy duty construction equipment, have now entered the smart phone world with the S40, a phone built to last and hopefully see an end to the above problems in the process!

So let’s have a look at those durability specs…

Dropping the phone
CAT say you can drop their phone from a height of up to 1.8m with no damage. Pretty impressive. Try doing that with an iPhone (actually, don’t!)

The 4.7in multi-touch screen enables wet finger tracking. Also the phone can withstand depth of 1m, for up to one hour.

This I had to try out. First I submerged the CAT S40 in a pint glass of water and tried to call it:

Then I put the phone in a sink of water and fully submerged it and again tried to call it:

As you can see from my above video the S40 didn’t falter even ringing from under water, now that’s cool!

Dustproof and scratchproof

Enabling you to use the phone in dusty and hazardous environments. The Cat S40 is certified IP68, an industry standard, meaning the device is dustproof and its 4.7-inch, 960-by-540 display is made from scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
I didn’t have any dust to hand or sand for that matter so I will have to take CATs word for it on this one.

Extreme temperatures

The phone can be used within the range of: -20º C to + 55º C. This means taking the phone away with you skiing or to the beach won’t be an issue.


You won’t need a case for the CAT S40 as it’s built to be durable. But that doesn’t mean it’s an ugly phone. Ok, it’s not super thin but it’s black rubber and grey metal construction looks smart and feels solid in the hand. The rubber backing means you get a good grip on the phone and it won’t be going anywhere, although, hey, if you drop it the phone will be fine anyway.


I think apart from all the durability talk above, one of my favourite features about the CAT S40 is the fact it can take two sim cards at once. This is an absolute godsend, I have no idea why other phone manufacters don’t do this. How many of us have both a work phone and a personal phone? Well, with the CAT S40 you can have two sim cards running at the same time in the one phone – to me, that’s a killer feature!

Overall, in my past few weeks using the CAT S40 I have been really impressed with what it has to offer. Durability without compromising on style and features to me is a totally winner.

There’s A Beer For That partners with Wahleeah for Preview Event

Not that long ago you would walk into a supermarket or pub and be rather underwhelmed by the choice of beers available.
The usual suspects from the usual big breweries would greet you and if you didn’t like that, well, tough!
I’m no beer snob and if it tastes good I’m all for it, so I never discount the big players.
But having a choice is key. Which is why I was chuffed to learn about the organisation, There’s A Beer For That.
Backed by Britain’s Beer Alliance, they exist to highlight over the over 5,000 high quality beers that are available in the UK. Ale, amber, bitter, blonde, lager, porter, pilsner, strong… Our brewers and pubs do us proud.

One of the nifty things There’s A Beer For That do is #BeerMatch, a unique Twitter service developed to give you instant beer recommendations, for hundreds of the nation’s favourite foods. All you need do is tweet the name of your dish to @BeerForThat with the hashtag #BeerMatch for an instant reply.
Of course, I tried to think of something to test this service and came up with a KFC burger thinking there’s no way… And as you can see, there was!


Anyway ‘There’s a Beer For That’ obviously know their stuff and so I was delighted when they invited me to new beer-based restaurant, Wahleeah in Fulham.


The former chef of Burger Breakout and Oslo in Hackney, Dave Ahern, has created a unique menu where beer takes centre stage. Each and every dish that is served at Wahleeah is made with – and perfectly paired with – over 40 different varieties of ales, stouts, lagers and IPA’s.

Wahleeah was a complete assault on the tastebuds – in a good way. My highlights were the tuna meatloaf and the cheesecake, both of which I will certainly be back again for. In fact, myself and my girlfriend have already made plans to return, and I encourage you to do the same.

Chicken meatballs, mushroom mash and beer gravy matched with St Stefanus Blonde 7%


This classic Belgian blonde beer melds beautifully with the deep and complex flavours of the chicken meatballs, mash and gravy. Malty sweetness is the key initially, but the beer has a yeasty cut that will keep the palette refreshed and wanting more of this rich dish.

Oxtail and onions with horseradish toast matched with Fuller’s Black Cab Stout 4.5%.


Oxtail has a very rich flavour, and the dark chocolatey notes of the stout will interweave with this dish and make it even more deep. The layers of malt in the Black Cab make this beer a great food accompaniment, however it has nice dry end to it that will mean the match is balanced and not overly sweet.

Caesar salad matched with Founder’s Pale Ale 5.4%.


The caesar salad is a surprisingly complex dish and this very well balanced pale ale sits well with it. A bigger beer would over power the flavours of the salad, but the Founder’s gentle malt sweetness and hop bitterness brings out all the subtle flavours of this dish.

Tuna meatloaf, polenta nicoise and bloody beer matched with Er Boqueron 4.8%.


Er Boqueron is a unique beer which uses sea water in the brewing process, giving it a dryness that works well with the yeast and malt. The minerality of the beer sits well with fish and in particular tuna, as it acts as a flavour enhancer as well as refreshing the palette.

Porter cheesecake with Beavertown Smog Rocket 5.4%.


This is a like with like dish – the sweet flavours of the porter in the cheesecake meld with the complexity of the dark beer. The smokiness of the beer will add another surprising layer to the cake, making you want to come back for more!

Students! Simple tips to lead a healthy lifestyle at uni

It’s that time of year where thousands of students will leave home for the first time to start their own independent adult lives. Yet freedom comes with great responsibility. This falls in the form of looking after your finances, keeping up with your uni course and taking care of your own health and wellbeing.

University is a juggling act; while on the one hand you want to excel in your studies, you also want to make friends and have an active social life, plus you still want to look after yourself and maintain your appearance. Something’s gotta give.

Here are our tips to stay healthy and balanced at uni.

Don’t double up


Burpees burn around 100 calories in 10 minutes, depending on your weight, but if you’ve ever done them before then you’ll know that 10 minutes of non-stop burpees is almost impossible.

Bear in mind that one single shot of vodka is around 72 calories. Doubling up and throwing in a mixer takes you to around 250 calories. Four doubles easily takes you to 1,000 calories, which is nearly half of your recommended daily allowance and nearly two hours of constant burpees! Bet those doubles don’t seem as attractive now?

Always opt for singles, you drink them at the same rate as doubles which can help reduce your overall intake. Plus, you’re supposed to drink responsibly anyway, right?

Take up a sport


Sociable activities don’t have to revolve around drinking, you’ll also find a vast array of sports and fitness clubs at university. Join a team, such as football, netball or rugby and make new friends while you keep active. Alternatively, many gyms offer discounted memberships to students, so you can work out for less.

Swap takeaways for fakeaways


Students spend a staggering £925 a year on buying takeaways, research by Hungryhouse (cited on the Student Guide) revealed. This is a huge amount of money to be wasting on food that will make you feel terrible. Instead of ordering a takeaway online, plan in advance and order your ingredients from a grocery store/supermarket to make a fakeaway.

Chinese-style chow mein, chicken curries and homemade pizzas can all be made in the same amount of time that it would take you to retrieve your laptop.

Limit your alcohol consumption to once a week


Student offers can be too good to miss, but don’t end up going to every night out just because you’re AFOMO (afraid of missing out). Instead, choose one big night a week that you are going to drink alcohol on and your body, bank balance and mental wellbeing will be much happier.

You can still go on nights out and refrain from drinking, wake up and bask in the smug feeling of letting everyone know how embarrassing they were the night before!

No matter how old we are I think its safe to say most of us men have different grooming routines some Im sure are great others we are a bit set in our ways or just doing things plain wrong! Myth #1 – The more shaving gel, the better the shave

Heineken “Spectre” Bond campaign

In an interesting bit of news Heineken have been announced as James Bonds beer of choice for the upcoming movie Spectre, the cool part is though as part of their campaign promotional cans will offer the chance to download behind the scenes content from Spectre and even download classic Bond films which is pretty cool.

The cans should start to roll into your local shops round about now so keep an eye out for Bonds beer of choice!
