Smanos W100i Alarm System Review

Posted on 28 July 2016 by Chris Ford

Moving to a new flat in East London from the quite comforts of the West of the city I rightly or wrongly was concerned about security so when we moved in one of the first things I wanted to do is setup some kind of alarm system.

My requirents were

  1. something simple to setup that required small to zero DIY skills ( Im a bit useless at all that)
  2. Alerts sent to my smart phone
  3. A one off fee, I don’t want to have to enter into yet another contract.
  4. Reasonable price point.
  5. A Webcam feature to capture the potential culprits in action!

With the above in mind and a bit of research I came across the Smanos W100i wifi Alarm and Cam Kit.

Whats in the box?

1x Control Panel / Box

1x Motion Sensor

1x Door/window Sensor

1x HD Wireless Camera

In the box you have a basic kit to get you started and will do for a small flat, but the good news is the system is expandable with the ability to add more cameras and sensor’s to the system over time as you see fit.

Setup was surprisingly simple taking me about 20 minutes from opening the box to annoying my girlfriend with the noise (had to test it!) the unit runs off your home wifi so everything communicated very easily once you have punched your details in.

Using the System

Setting / arming the system can all be done via smart phone app which is extremely handy, this can also be done via the two included remotes but I found they went straight in a drawer as the app is all you really need.

If the alarm is triggered you can log into the app and take a look at the webcam to see what’s going on, decide it was just a cat and disarm and reset or call the Police etc.  The Webcam also has a SD card slot for recordings which is a great idea as most camera systems like this record to the cloud , a cloud you have to pay a subscription for and are then stuck with.

If you are looking for a simple yet stylish looking alarm system that is easy to setup and easy to operate when set off then I can highly recommend the Smanos system. This is a beginners set though and I already plan to buy a few more sensors for various rooms in the house but I’m also safe in the knowledge that these will be simple enough to add to the system.

The most addictive free online games to play this summer

Posted on 28 July 2016 by Chris Ford

#2048 : best game since FlappyBird, easy” (CC BY-SA 2.0) by  sennichan

Summer is here and the heat for some is almost unbearable. Although it’s nice to go out and enjoy the sun, some people prefer to sit inside with the fan and cool off with an ice cream and some quality online games. Then again, if you are the kind of person who likes to worship the sun, you could take your laptop outside and enjoy the games there. Either way, here are some of the top online games to play for free this summer.

Online Scratch Cards

There is something strangely satisfying about scratching away at a card to find out if you have won. Inspired by the traditional scratch cards available from your local supermarket, there are now hundreds of online scratch card games that follow the same basic formula. There are some sites on which players can now enjoy scratch cards for free, to get a feel for them before paying real money to play. The themed scratch cards are designed to appeal to a wide variety of audiences, and are based on films like King Kong and Rocky, and TV shows like Baywatch.

The Walking Dead: The Way of Existence

The Walking Dead is one of the most popular TV shows on the planet, and if you are one of the millions of viewers that can’t wait for it to return in October, there are a few other ways to get your fix of zombies. The Telltale game series is a hugely popular spin-off of the AMC series, and involves a lot of role playing, decision-making and problem-solving. But if you prefer pure Shoot ‘Em Up action, the free online game The Way of Existence may be right up your street. Play as Rick initially and stand behind a barricade desperately shooting at wave after wave of undead enemies. Between levels you can use in-game money earned to research new weaponry, new technology, or upgrade your defences. This is a basic game, but highly addictive and intense.

Monster Truck Demolisher

If you like monster trucks and explosions, then this game will be right up your street. Use the arrow keys to control a monster truck along a 2D course, smashing up smaller cars and bombs on the way. There are endless amounts of addictive levels with fresh challenges all along the game, including ways to upgrade your truck. It also requires a fair amount of skill to get the balance right and cause the most destruction possible.

Bubble Spinner

If you prefer puzzle games, give Bubble Spinner a try. The aim is to fire coloured balls into a large mass of different coloured balls in the centre, and eliminate balls of the same colour. To add some difficulty to the equation, the mass in the centre spins when balls hit it, and occasionally other balls are magnetised towards it, increasing its mass. The therapeutic music and the satisfaction of clearing the bubbles makes this game an instant classic.

These games are just a few ideas to get you started, there are hundreds of other fantastic addictive games out there to keep you busy while you relax this summer.

Getting Creative with Haywards Pickles

Getting Creative with Haywards Pickles

Posted on 07 July 2016 by Chris Ford

In 1868 the Haywards Brothers of Montford Place, Kennington, formed a company making pickles, sauces, vinegar and cordials. In my house growing up Hawwards onions and Piccalilli were religiously rolled out at Christmas

While a staple at festive times for a lot of families Haywards are trying to change that with the idea that their pickled products can be used in lots of different inventive ways to enhance and create dishes we may not have considered before, with this in mind they invited myself and a few fellow blogger along to a kitchen to show off some of the versatile ways the products can be used.

We were shown six different dishes on the night but I think my favourite and most inventive was the Homemade Indian Turkey Piccalilli Curry the demo of which I captured for you on film below

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tbsp mild curry powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds, ground (optional)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 320g chopped turkey breast
  • 400g coconut milk tin
  • 100g Haywards Medium & Tangy Piccalilli
  • Fresh coriander and steamed rice, to serve

  • Method
  • In a food processor, combine the garlic, curry powder, cumin seeds, onion and oil.
  • Place a saucepan on the heat and add the mixture. Cook for 2 mins, then add the turkey, cooking until sealed.
  • Add the coconut milk and the piccalilli and bring to the boil.
  • Simmer for 10 mins and serve with coriander and steamed rice.

All of the new recipes were delicious inventive and certainly made me think of pickled veg as more than just a garnish or something to have a Christmas and I think it’s a testament to how good the curry is that I have already made it twice since our demo a few weeks ago, it really is that good!

For more info on Haywards products and other recipe ideas head over to , Haywards didn’t pay me for this post (but they did give me a jar of pickled onions!)

The Vapers Have Taken Over!

The Vapers Have Taken Over!

Posted on 07 July 2016 by Chris Ford

Vaping. Everyone is doing it but not everyone gets it. It is almost as mysterious as the vanilla custard puff of smoke that surrounds one. There is one thing we do know, however. It is very 21st century and it is here to stay.leo Celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp love a vape or two and numerous other famous faces are regularly seen in the press holding onto something suspiciously long and silvery. There is no denying that a vape is an interesting little gadget, too. How does it work? What are the mechanics? If you visit luxury new vaping stores such as Vapelux you will see a vast array of different colours, designs, mods, tanks and starter kits, all reasonably priced, too. It is like your very own online vape sweet shop! On YouTube there is a whole community of vapers from around the world showing off the latest vape in various tutorials and reviews. It is like a whole other world out there. But is it really better for you than smoking? Some say it is a safer alternative and urge smokers to make the switch. Who knows, only time will tell, but for now, I think they are pretty darn cool and smell like incense or something – that has got to be better than a cigarette, right?
