Gioteck EX-06 Headset Review

Posted on 29 November 2013 by Chris Ford

For a while now I have been looking for a replacement set of headphones for my in ear buds, so in the first of a series of reviews I’m taking a look at the options out there

The first thing that strikes you about the Gioteck EX-06 is they have a nice solid build to them, while they are plastic they have a nice what feels like rubberized feel to them, they also fold down which is handy for stowing them away in your bag or in the supplied hard-case when not in use.

The sound quality is quite stunning, for a £35.00 pair of headphones I really wasn’t expecting to be blown away by the sound but I really was so impressed with the EX-06, instrumentation had good separation, vocals were crystal clear as was guitar and bass.

New life was brought into the already impressive 40th Anniversary remaster of Bowie’s Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, I found myself skipping back to listen to certain tracks again and again. The over ear 40mm drivers are pure bliss to my ears.

Well for me they are a bit bulky for everyday use on my daily commute, but I think one of the positives of the rather large design is that the ear cups really solidly grip your ears shutting out the outside world to the point I couldn’t even hear the drivers announcement on the tube when music was playing, I was shut away I’m my own musically bliss which on a boring repetitive train journey back and forth into London each day can never be a bad thing!

I had the wired version which comes with a inline microphone and pause/play call answer button but no volume control. but these are also available in a wireless version ideal for gaming and skyping.

As I said I do find them a bit bulky but in time I’m sure will get used to that but one place I will be using these will be on my next flight where I’m almost positive this fantastic value headset will block out most of the noise.

The EX-06 is available in wireless (SRP £59.99) and wired (SRP £34.99) formats this November. For more information and to join Giotecks mailing list visit

Wrap Up Warm the British Way with Barbour

Posted on 22 November 2013 by Chris Ford

With the winter weather setting in and days getting colder and colder I have been looking around for a new winter coat, all the usual places on the high street have been a little uninspiring this year so I went searching online and have just done something I never thought I would do, I’ve bought my first Barbour Jacket!

Barbour jackets were founded by Scot John Barbour in South Shields England so its a thoroughly British company with the jackets still made in South Shields you are also supporting British manufacturing which is a nice Bonus.

I think my aversion to buying a Barbour in the past has mainly been they always seemed a bit too grownup or something farmers would wear but things change, a quilted Barbour jacket is now worn by both young and old and no one will mistake you for a farmer!

Ive opted for this model from online men’s fashion store Cockney Rebel Fashions

The Barbour Quilted Lutz jacket is a lovely tailored fit jacket and at £149.00 I think quite reasonable priced, I can’t wait for it to arrive!

While not a British company I couldn’t help while browsing the range from Diesel Jeans online also picking up this great Shawl neck wool blazer also from Cockney Rebel to help layer up! and currently at £79.99 not bad value at all.

What are your winter pickups? let us know on our Twitter @GentlemensGoods we would love to hear from you

The coolest steering controls in the world

The coolest steering controls in the world

Posted on 21 November 2013 by Chris Ford

There’s no denying it: there’s nothing better than a super cool gadget with loads of little buttons, controls and functions. What do they all do? What happens if I move this? What happens if I press the red button?
It feeds our inquisitive nature but also lets us be in control of something. And when that something has four wheels, double bonus points.

The coolest steering controls in the world - Lotus wheel
The F1 steering wheel
[Lotus wheel image credit: By Francesco via Wikimedia Commons]
A Formula 1 steering wheel varies slightly from make to make and team to team, but they have the same standard components. The controls adjust the running parameters for the engine, transmission and differential. Being in the seat of a F1 car, you’d surely feel like you were controlling the Millennium Falcon.
In this video, Nico Rosberg talks us through the controls of a Mercedes steering wheel:
The Lotus F1 guys recently created a joke steering wheel for Kimi Raikkonen, which contained a ‘call mum’ button, a tweet button and an option to deploy an Angry Bird. If only this were real. Perhaps LG, sponsors of Formula 1, could start branching out into the automobile field…

Bond car features
Ok, so it’s not the steering controls as such, but the Aston Martin V8 Vantage in The Living Daylights had a secret control panel by the gearstick which included buttons for spiked tyres, lasers which cut through steel, retractable skis and land to land missiles – pretty cool!
Check out the chase scene in this video:
Meanwhile, the Lotus Espirit seen in The Spy Who Loved Me could actually turn into a submarine. That’s a pretty handy feature to have, that’s if you use your car for more than just shopping at Tesco.

Steering the Batmobile
How could we write a post about cool car controls and not mention the Batmobile? The steering wheel of the 1966 Lincoln Futura, used for the original Batmobile, was cut into a U-shape. The star of the TV series, Adam West, disliked the shape so much though that the designer replaced it with a standard Edsel steering wheel.
The latest portrayal of the Batmobile is the Tumbler, seen in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy: a much tougher vehicle, worthy of being called a ‘machine’ rather than a car. The chassis, suspension and steering were all custom built by the film’s special effects department to host hydraulically operated aerofoil flaps, a jet burner, 20mm cannons in the nose cone and rear ejecting spike mines. To quote Jim Gordon, “I got to get me one of those”.

MINI Connected – Deezer

Posted on 18 November 2013 by Chris Ford

I’m always interested in anything new or different in the tech world, a sucker for new gadgets and gizmos I’m a early adopter of a lot of new tech sometimes to my benefit sometimes to my downfall (HD-DVD anyone?).

So it was with great excitement I approached the offer from MINI to check out their latest in car entertainment system called ‘MINI connected’.

The idea being you connect your Iphone (sorry no Android connection currently) to the usb socket in the car via the supplied cable and MINI connected springs into life, MINI  connected offers a whole host of info about the car via the app such a mileage  fuel consumption etc but what really interested me was the music integration.

First of all the MINI communicates seamlessly with the Iphone displaying track information and artwork directly from your Iphones library , with the large round screen in the centre of the console  beautifully displaying everything you need to know this alone had me impressed, the menu system and controls are very  intuitive and not the sort of system you need to read the instruction manual for ( I never do anyway!)

One of the nice things about MINI connected is Deezer integration.  Deezer if you didn’t know is a online cloud based music service where you stream music directly to your phone over the internet , you can create playlists, listen to custom playlists created by others or what they call ‘Radio stations’  which constantly play ( much like a radio station) tracks from a specific genre or theme , and with access to over 30 million songs with Deezer you go way beyond the memory limits of your phone or the music you own on it.

So the integration is really simple, once your Iphone is connected you run the Deezer app on the phone and then select Deezer from the MINIs menu.  Then you are free to use internet streamed music in your MINI ! The music also plays in exactly the same way as it would if stored on your phone with full artwork and track and album information included, very impressive!

So as you can tell I was pretty impressed with the Deezer service in the MINI and Im happy to announce MINI are kindly giving away a few MINI branded prizes to two readers that come up with our favourite roadtrip playlist that you would put into Deezer to play while cruising in your MINI.

Heres a example of mine :

Passenger – Iggy Pop

Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen

Get Lucky – Daft Punk

Don’t Stop Believin – Journey

Highway to Hell – AC/DC

So all we need is you to email us the names of your ultimate five track roadtrip playlist to , I will the select two winners on December the first who will both win a MINI gear stick umbrella and MINI coffee mug.

The UK premiere of In Fear took place at the ICA in London this Tuesday , the debut psychological thriller by Jeremy Lovering.

The Stella Artois bursary programme aims to financially support exceptional creative talent and bring smaller releases to a wider audience, providing unique cinematic experiences to film fans. In Fear was the seventh film Stella Artois has supported since the bursary programme began in August 2012.

In Jeremy Lovering’s chilling debut, a young couple fights to survive one night-turned-nightmare. Driving to a music festival, Tom and Lucy have plans to stay at a countryside hotel. But with hotel signs leading them in circles and darkness falling, they soon become lost in a maze of country roads, and the target of an unknown tormentor.

Reminiscent of vintage psychological thrillers and bolstered by newcomer Iain De Caestecker, along with Allen Leech in its main roles, In Fear plays out in real time and hinges on a claustrophobic, unrelentingly tense horror thriller.

“In Fear is a wonderfully crafted masterpiece which is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.  We are delighted that our bursary programme has given the film the chance to have the premiere it deserves.” said Phil Pick, UK Marketing Manager for Stella Artois. “The Stella Artois bursary enables film makers to showcase their rich talent by offering opportunities that were previously not possible, such as premieres and director Q&A’s.”

The In Fear premiere is the latest instalment in a series of events funded by the Stella Artois bursary programme which has been set up to support stand-out film.  Previous support has enabling premieres for Sightseers and A Field in England.

I was lucky enough to attend the premiere on Tuesday along with three pair of lucky competition winners and thoroughly enjoyed the film, we met the stars of the film and also the awesome Simon Pegg was amoungst the stars who turned up to see the film.

I highly recommended you check In Fear out.

A’kin Pureman Hair and Body Wash

A’kin Pureman Hair and Body Wash

Posted on 11 November 2013 by Eddie

This hair and body wash is described as soap, paraben and sulphate free. Of all of these the paraben is an important consideration for me as there is a potential link between this group of chemicals and some cancers. This product is also petrochemical free, organic and vegan. So that should keep the latent hippy in all of us happy.

That’s the science done! Onto the scent. This body wash reminds me of the stereotypical smells of Christmas with the main note being of orange and a slightly more subdued, but still very evident spice. These spices are naturally derived from: ginseng, ginger, cardamom, and clove. When I have an early start I need to be up around 5:30 am and this is a spicy slap in the face to get me ready for the day. I love the spice and I love how it seems to fill the shower with its aroma.

Another group that this is great is for is those who do water sports as it is a great contrast to the salty smell you get after being on the water for a day. I’ll now pack it whenever I go scuba diving (or just to visit the beach)

The scent doesn’t linger after using this product, which I prefer as this distinctive smell would interfere with any aftershave I would use.

The obligatory girlfriend comment: I’d like to have mentioned that it reminds me of Christmas, but as he’s already said that all I say is: ”the holidays are coming, the holidays are coming…”. But in a mulled wine kind of memory and not a sugar based soft drink!

Available now from Holland and Barrett, and or    from £7.90
