Grooming Tips for the Changing Seasons

Grooming Tips for the Changing Seasons

Posted on 17 September 2015 by Chris Ford

The Murdock London team were speaking at the Society of Master Craftsmen evening, hosted by premium Belgium beer brand, Affligem ahead of their participation in London Restaurant Festival.’ In this guest post the Murdock team give us all some grooming advice for the changing seasons.
Wind, cold air and rain replace the sunshine in providing potential harm to the more delicate skin on your face as we get into the winter months. Apply a good, pumice based scrub to your skin once or twice a week, using your finger tips to focus on your t zone and any especially dry areas of your skin to remove dead skin.
Twice a day, morning and night, take a light face moisturiser and massage it onto your skin with light pressure in ‘outwards’ circular motions, don’t forget the areas around the nose, the corners of the mouth and between the eyebrows as these tend to be extra dry. The sweat glands on your skin face downwards, a common mistake is to just rub downwards on to your skin, this actually stops the skin from absorbing the moisturiser.
For the rest of your skin use a richer oil, based on nut oils to hydrate, or ginseng to repair, to keep your whole body feeling soft and nurtured. Murdock London’s Exfoliating Facial Scrub, Hydrating Facial Moisturiser and Avalon Body Lotion are the products to look too.
Another symptom of the colder, wetter months is hair becoming frizzy due to humidity or wind. Tame the frizz by using a conditioner after your shampoo. Murdock’s Quince and Oakmoss conditioner uses vitamin E and wheat proteins to keep hair looking healthy and frizz-free.
As the sun sets on London’s summer, longer beards are set to return, and they face the same threat from frizz as your hair does. Avoid using any products made for your head hair on your beard: nearly all of them are formulated to clean your hair and are too acidic for the hair and skin on your face. They will leave both feeling dried out and fragile. Fear not, as shampoos and conditioners for your beard are available to tame any frizz. Murdock’s Beard Shampoo has an anti-static agent to stop frizz, its PH neutral to your skin and based on coconut oil, so will leave both beard and face feeling nurtured as well as fresh.
Whilst waiting for your nan to knit you more mittens for Christmas you need to take good care of the skin on your hands, as the cold weather can cause cracks and roughness. Carry a rich, buttery moisturiser like Murdock’s Restoring Hand Healer at all times, and use whenever needed. Shea and Cocoa butters make this a formidable moisturiser to stand up to the harsh London winter. Whilst trimming finger nails rub a moisturiser into your cuticles to soften them and make it easier to push them back and remove them.
As the seasons change, so should a gentleman’s fragrance. Lighter, more citrus based colognes should be used for crisper, brighter days, while evenings should be reserved for woody, spicier fragrances. Murdock’s Avalon cologne, with top notes of cold-pressed Sicilian bergamot, is perfect for a crisp autumn morning, whilst our Napier cologne with its base note of oakmoss is a delicious fragrance for the evening.

Male Grooming Myth Busters

Posted on 09 September 2015 by Chris Ford

No matter how old we are I think its safe to say most of us men have different grooming routines some Im sure are great others we are a bit set in our ways or just doing things plain wrong! I know I have been guilty of this in the past which is why Im please to bring you in conjuction with Man Cave grooming products the top four grooming myths for the modern man

Myth #1 – The more shaving gel, the better the shave

False. When it comes to shaving gel, less is more. Smothering your chin in gel could leave you with dry skin and an empty shaving cream bottle sooner than you’d expected. The key is finding a cream that will provide even coverage and allow the blade to glide smoothly across the face with a small amount of product.

ManCave ShaveGel is infused with a Pre-Shave treatment to soften the beard while preparing skin for a close and comfortable shave, using only a small amount of product

Myth #2 – Moisturisers will make oily skin oilier

Wrong! Contrary to popular belief, using moisturiser on oily skin will not increase oiliness. Moisturisers are designed to lock in the skin’s naturally occurring moisture, as well as protect the skin from the daily elements.

ManCave’s natural face Moisturiser is enriched with bioactives to create a soothing easily absorbed formula, which rejuvenates, retextures and helps firm skin leaving a smooth matte finish.

Myth #3 – Men’s and women’s products are the same

False. Men’s skin is up to 20% thicker than women’s. It’s much oilier and ages differently too, so it needs different vitamins and minerals, which means different products.

ManCave’s products are developed specifically for men and the bold branding is an unapologetic statement of masculinity.

Myth #4 – Shaving after a shower is better

Curveball. This one is actually true. Shower steam opens up the pores for a closer, cleaner shave and to minimise skin irritation.

To get even more out of your shower, use an invigorating shower gel such as ManCave’s Lemon & Oak ShowerGel which has been developed to uplift and stimulate with a range of essential oils serving to prepare you for whatever the day holds.

My Morning Routine – National Grooming Day

My Morning Routine – National Grooming Day

Posted on 21 August 2015 by Chris Ford

Well today is National grooming day and to celebrate Mira Showers the bathroom specialists asked me to share with you what I get up to in my bathroom as part of my morning routine so here we go:

Brush My Teeth

The first thing I do is brush my teeth, I use a sonicare tooth brush and have done for years, trust me if you haven’t used one it will change your life!

Every morning I jump in the shower first washing a shower gel then on alternated days I shampoo my hair and finally while in the shower I use a facial cleanser, I love the bright awake feeling it gives me when I wash it off, amazing way to start the day!

I only started moisturising a few years ago but feel so much better for it, I rub some mosituriser in my face before bed and when I get out of the shower in the morning, if you don’t currently moisturise you really should start.
Style Hair
When I was younger I used gel to sickly heavy levels, now I use a simple Pomade to slick back my hair leaving a much more natural look and feel than that gel ever did!

I’m going through a scruffy beard phase at the moment but when not I would shave daily using a shave gel as opposed to cream, I’ve always found the cream messy and annoying a gel is a much simpler solution.

So there you go its basic but it gets the job done!

Head Blade – Review

Posted on 27 May 2015 by Chris Ford

Being a member of the shaved head club (not baldy lol) and after seeing these when on holiday in the USA , i always dismissed them as being a gimmick. How could they improve on a standard razor right? Well i was completely wrong. I jumped at the chance of reviewing one when Gentleman’s Goods asked if i would be interested .

The package came in the post from the lovely guys at Headblade , and i was immediately impressed with the design of the razor, it looks like a mini all terrain vehicle . The shave cream which is aptly titled Head Slick comes in a sports type bottle , the two compliment each other greatly and look very smart sat on the shelf

On to the testing

Now it states anything over 3 to 4 days growth should be taken down with clippers first, so i really put this to the test with 7 days growth. Firstly i have to say Head Slick is probably the best shave cream ive used. Nice and thin layer so you can see what your doing easily , yet superb protection. It allows the razor to glide across the scalp. It is very gently mentholated which gives a very pleasant aroma and fresh cool feeling to the skin after shaving . This photo shows my hair growth before shaving

And after just one pass of the ATX

The ATX is so easy to use as you are basically holding your hand flat against your head. No awkward razor handles to manipulate around your head.

It took about half the time it usually takes to shave, and i found i had complete trust in shaving quickly with it as the wheels keep the blade in the perfect position. You dont need a second razor either for your face, you can just hold the ATX slightly differently and it works perfectly. This saves a lot of time and expense in having separate razors. I sometimes have problems with shaving creams irritating my skin, but the Head Slick is very gentle indeed and i felt great after using it.

That about sums it up. Would i buy another? Yes im going to .

Wingman Grooming

Posted on 14 April 2015 by Chris Ford

Onto the once sparse now quite crowded men’s grooming market steps WingMan, so whats different? Well Created with a leading chemist who has worked across several innovative products, he creators say its anti-aging and free from parabens.
What are parabens I hear you ask? Well they have been widely used for decades to prevent bacteria growth in products, recent studies though have suggested a possible link to cancer so its probably something we should try and avoid so I was happy to hear Wingman were free of parabens.

The Skin Fuel range is five products strong and available in compact sizes making them perfect for men on the move. The range has been developed in a three step system (1) scrub, 2) wash and 3) moisturise), designed to be simple yet effective.
Skin Fuel Original Moisturiser, £5.99:: a hydrating gel/cream enhanced with Ginseng that gives a cooling energy boost to revive and brighten tired skin. It helps moisturise, providing 24 hour hydration whilst working to repair and mattify skin with a non-greasy finish.

Skin Fuel Original Face Wash, £3.99: a foaming gel that cleanses, nourishes and conditions skin without drying it out. Enhanced with stimulating ginseng to counteract dryness and restore PH balance for clear and energised skin.

Skin Fuel Original Face Scrub, £4.49: a purifying cream scrub that exfoliates dead skin cells, unclogs pores and removes impurities like oil and dirt.

Skin Fuel Sensitive Moisturiser, £5.99: works the same way as the original moisturiser however, the ginseng is replaced with aloe vera to help soothe and cool dry and irritated skin, aloe vera works to actively support natural defences whilst moisturising and protecting skin.

Skin Fuel Sensitive Face Wash, £3.99: a foaming gel that cleanses, nourishes and conditions skin without drying it out, made with soothing Aloe Vera to help reinforce natural defences, skin will be nourished and refreshed.

Curling with Lacoste fragrances

Posted on 10 December 2014 by Chris Ford

Curling, is a Sport of Scottish origin in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. So a bit like bowls but on ice. Recently Lacoste Fragrances invited me and some other bloggers down to England’s only Curling rink in Kent to give curling a bash.IMG_2887

Having only recently recovered from two fractured elbows I was a little wary of this and had visions of falling over but when we got there I found out we don’t actually wear skates when curling you just wear special trainers , they are actually really easy to walk on the ice once you get used to it.

photo 24

While I may not be joining the Olympic team any time soon the two hours we were there whizzed by, Curling was so much fun, and really isn’t as easy as it looks, even if you push your stone at the right speed the other teams job is to brush the ice in front of your stone and make it over shoot the target which we had lots of fun trying!

Barber & Parlour , London

Posted on 03 November 2014 by Chris Ford

I don’t know about you but getting my hair cut isn’t something I enjoy, it just always seems a hassle that has to be done but I’d rather it wasn’t as boring and dull.
Barber & Parlour in a way have made that happen, Up until now based in Shorditch house but now they have moved this is stunning three level building at 64-66 Redchurch street in the heart of Shorditch. Barber and Parlour allows you to eat, drink, and socialise while being primped, primed and groomed to perfection.

On the ground level there is the mens barbours , café and small shop, downstairs the Electric Cinema and upstairs the ladies saloon.
While you are downstairs getting your hair trimmed your girlfriend can be upstairs in the ladies salon doing the same, then once you are done meet back downstairs for a drink and a bite to eat, maybe catch a movie in the basement cinema? Yes this place really is somewhere you can spend all day.
Last week I went down for a trim and to take a look around and came away truly impressed.
Prices are at the mid to higher end for men’s barbering but the skill and attention to detail shown by Pappy my barber for the day was second to none and while a little more than I usually pay, the service and environment are top notch, and you can even have a beer while your hair is being cut (yes of course I did!) I will certainly be back for my next trim at Barber & Parlour.

Here’s an example of some of the different services the barbers offer :

The Neville express facial 30 minutes £35.00
Facial cleanse and exfoliation using hot towel. This treatment focuses on using the Neville grooming range to enhance the skins natural appearance when time is of the essence.

Quick beard trim and condition 30 minutes £15.00
A quick tidy using scissors and clippers to get the best out of your beard and moustache. Using their new beard grooming oil and moustache wax to finish.

Wash and style 30 minutes £20.00
To clean, dry and style the hair to feel fresh and look your best.

Quick tidy up 30 minutes £30.00
A quick trim on the back and sides between haircuts to look sharp.

NEVILLE Barber(1)

What Else?
I didn’t have time to try the food but taking a look at the menu the café seems a great place to grab a light bite, have a beer and meet friends before going to the excellent Electric Cinema downstairs in the basement. Being a movie buff I was especially impressed by this, each seat is a armchair and extremely comfy, with straight facing seats costing £18.00 ( about average for central London) the side angled armchairs are a bargain £8 each!! I will certainly be popping down to catch a movie after my next trim.
Barber & Parlour are located at 64-66 Redchurch street very close to Shoreditch Station and are open now, if you would like to see one of the barbers it is advised to book ahead.
