Head Blade – Review

Posted on 27 May 2015 by Chris Ford

Being a member of the shaved head club (not baldy lol) and after seeing these when on holiday in the USA , i always dismissed them as being a gimmick. How could they improve on a standard razor right? Well i was completely wrong. I jumped at the chance of reviewing one when Gentleman’s Goods asked if i would be interested .

The package came in the post from the lovely guys at Headblade , and i was immediately impressed with the design of the razor, it looks like a mini all terrain vehicle . The shave cream which is aptly titled Head Slick comes in a sports type bottle , the two compliment each other greatly and look very smart sat on the shelf

On to the testing

Now it states anything over 3 to 4 days growth should be taken down with clippers first, so i really put this to the test with 7 days growth. Firstly i have to say Head Slick is probably the best shave cream ive used. Nice and thin layer so you can see what your doing easily , yet superb protection. It allows the razor to glide across the scalp. It is very gently mentholated which gives a very pleasant aroma and fresh cool feeling to the skin after shaving . This photo shows my hair growth before shaving

And after just one pass of the ATX

The ATX is so easy to use as you are basically holding your hand flat against your head. No awkward razor handles to manipulate around your head.

It took about half the time it usually takes to shave, and i found i had complete trust in shaving quickly with it as the wheels keep the blade in the perfect position. You dont need a second razor either for your face, you can just hold the ATX slightly differently and it works perfectly. This saves a lot of time and expense in having separate razors. I sometimes have problems with shaving creams irritating my skin, but the Head Slick is very gentle indeed and i felt great after using it.

That about sums it up. Would i buy another? Yes im going to .

Man Clubs – Cornerstone Shaving

Posted on 05 August 2014 by Chris Ford

In our second in a series looking at monthly clubs with a male focus we take a look at grooming clubs, specifically shaving.

This to me is a no brainer, how often do you find you have run out of shaving gel or your blade is blunt? happens to me all the time!

Cornerstone offer a shaving club which you can completely customized to suit your shaving habits (as we are all a bit different)

First of all they ask you the frequency of your shaving, Daily, Now and then, or Not Often.

You then get to select what you would like included in each package, razors, Pre Shave Face Scrub a shaving gel and a post shave balm.

Your first package will include a razor handle , the blades were created especially for Cornerstone by one of the world’s leading razor manufacturers and feature 5 blades with an aloe vera strip. The Cornerstone razor blades feature a ‘gothic arch’ – the product of a unique method of precision grinding that makes them sharper for longer.

Ive been using the Cornerstone products for just over a month now and there is certainly a big improvement in my shave, the finish is a lot smoother and the shave scrub smells lovely!

100% Natural Australian Jojoba Oil

100% Natural Australian Jojoba Oil

Posted on 17 March 2014 by Eddie

This product is described as useful for pretty much any reason, from moisturising the skin to being therapeutic to acne and eczema sufferers. I received a 30ml bottle of this oil. The bottle is nicely shaped with a pump top to dispense a small amount with each press. I prefer this, as all too often with these products you struggle to get any, then most of the bottle ends up in your hand (just like ketchup).

When I was sent this to try I was told that it is a good pre-shave oil. As some of you may have read in an earlier review I’ve been converted to using oils under a lather to reduce irritation whilst shaving.

The most important thing that I find when testing these products is to isolate them in a routine so that I can be objective about the performance. So I soaked my brush and then put a couple of squirts of oil in my hand. I rubbed this into my wet stubble and then lathered as per usual. This oil didn’t perform quite as well as dedicated shaving oil, but for a multipurpose product is performed much better than my expectation. That said, given the benefits to people with eczema and acne I can see this being a great product to help reduce shaving irritation without making these skin complaints worse.

I also used it as post shave oil. Jojoba oil is very similar to the sebum that the skin produces naturally. This means that is can moisturise without causing irritation. I found it a good post shave product used this way. The lack of scent means I can twin it with whatever scent I want without a clash. It is reported to reduce ingrown hairs, I’ve not had it long enough to find this out, but have no reason to doubt it and it will be the icing on the cake.

In conclusion, this is a great product to have in the bathroom, it works both before and after shaving and works well used in both situations. I’d especially recommend to people who struggle with sensitivity to normal shaving products.

Bluebeard’s revenge deluxe Shaving kit

Bluebeard’s revenge deluxe Shaving kit

Posted on 09 September 2013 by Eddie

I was excited to receive a fantastically masculine “deluxe kit” from Bluebeard’s revenge. The holographic skull and crossed bones adorned gift boxed ensemble consists of: Pre-shave oil, shaving cream, post shave balm, “doubloon” shaving brush, and a roll on antiperspirant deodorant. Alongside this set I also received the cologne and a shavette straight razor (these will be reviewed in the future).  These products are all in separate individual boxes in the blue gift box, but more of that later.

The thing that stands out with this brand the unashamed marketing telling “the bum fluff brigade” and girls that they need not apply, a la Yorkie bars. Another nice and more serious aspect is the supporting of the orchid charity, this charity supports male cancer sufferers and provides preventative education. In supporting this charity the typically unprinted inside of the boxes are printed with advice on symptoms and self examination to help in detecting cancers early etc. (so there is no excuse not to check your balls when alone in the bathroom).

First up the pre shave oil: This is a new thing to my wet shave regime, I’ve never seen the need for this until I was sent this to try. This stuff is fantastic, I always struggle with getting a close & irritation free shave on the right side of my neck due to a strange hair growth pattern. When I apply this first, no matter what shave cream I use the irritation is reduced.

Next is the shave cream, the scent was developed to remind the user of a classic English barbershop (the sort that shaves, not the sort that performs surgical operations) with a modern twist. The scent has grown on me and I now really enjoy it, so stick with it if you are used to the more floral scents that men are bombarded with these days. This product lathers well and provides a great level of lubrication for even the sharpest blade, twinned with the pre-shave oil the shave is the most comfortable and easiest close shave I’ve had. There is a growth inhibitor in this cream, there is science behind the claims, but I’ve not used it enough to comment on this.

To finish the shave there is the need for a shave balm. This little tub of gel has a very gelatinous consistency with a scent that follows the rest of the range. Once you slap it on the Aloe Vera gets to work and sooths any irritation that has occurred. This scent lingers for hours at a pleasant level.

The antiperspirant is good, stops sweat and smell like the rest, I’ve not got much else to say.

I really enjoy having a set of grooming products that works well together without picking and mixing different brands trying to find scents that work well together.

My only slight criticism is of the doubloon brush, while this brush is perfectly adequate with a great back bone that lathers well, it is a bit small. I have now relegated this to my travel wash bag, but even if you are used to using a much bigger brush, it still works well and I found it behaved much better than I expected it to given its small size. If you aren’t used to a bristle brush, be warned: the first few times you use one it will smell like road kill, but this wears off (this is the same with all bristle brushes). And more to the point why are you sniffing your shaving brush?!

This set will make a great present for any guy who has a decent beard. (even if you buy it for yourself, you know you deserve a present)

I will definitely be buying more of these in the future when my current supply runs out.

The girlfriend says: I thought it would look weird to have products with skull and crossbones next to my rubber duck, but it is a quirky juxtaposition.ducks

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Power Select Razor

Posted on 03 January 2013 by Chris Ford

Recently I was invited to try Wilkinson Swords brand new Razor the Hydro 5 Power Select, and over the last month I have been using it for my daily shave to give it a proper evaluation.

I think we are all getting a bit tired of a new razor coming out every year claiming to be the next big thing in shaving by adding that all important ( or not!) extra blade and to be honest I expect the Hydro 5 to be no different but after near on a month using it I will say its probably the best shave I have ever given myself, not as good a a professional cut throat shave but its very close!

The razor has a built in vibration  setting which can be customised to limit skin irritation and also a handy battery indicator lets you know clearly when you are about to run out of juice.

Probably my favourite feature of this new razor though is the gel reservoir which contains Wilkinson Swords ‘skin defence complex’  which hydrates your skin during the shave and feels rather wonderful once you are done.

If you are in the market for a new razor I can thoroughly recomend the Hydro 5, I’m really happy with the close shave and the soft and refreshed feeeling after the shave, Im sure you will be too.

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Power select is available nationwide now with a RRP of £12.99 for the razor and a pack of 4 blades is £9.99

Try A 4 Blade Drive Next Time You Shave

Try A 4 Blade Drive Next Time You Shave

Posted on 14 November 2010 by Marc

When it comes to shaving I freely admit I am very much old school in my preference of using a shaving brush and soap over canned foam and a single blade razor rather than one of the numerous multi bladed cartridges that are now available. That is not to say I don’t try them, I just find myself returning to that which I am used to.

While a wet shave is always preferable, there are times when it’s just not practical and for that reason I also have an electric razor, it doesn’t give me as close a shave as I would like but I’m not sure anyone would notice. I don’t feel I’m alone there, a lot of men I know say the same thing and it seems manufacturers are starting to listen, or at least Panasonic are.

Panasonic have recently launched two new 4-blade wet and dry shavers for men. They claim the new models, the ES-RF41 and the ES-RF31, are certain to put smiles on men’s faces thanks to a revolutionary 4-blade cutting system unique to Panasonic. The secret seemingly lies in an additional, extra-thin, finishing foil thereby expanding the shaving surface and enhancing results.

By increasing the number of blades the shave should be both faster (more blades cut down shaving time) and smoother (four blades achieve closer skin contact with lighter shaving strokes) resulting in a closer shave, even if you have tough stubble. Interestingly the average male facial hair, when dry, is as tough as a copper wire of the same thickness. This may explain why most women are not so keen on stubble when it’s pressed against their face!

As with the majority of Panasonic’s men’s shavers, the RF-series are 100% waterproof so can be used dry or in the shower with gel, foam or soap to further protect and soften the skin.  The outer foils feature a revolutionary curved shape that fits uniformly against the skin, even under the chin and the multi-directional pivoting head in both models adapts up, down, left and right to fit the contours of the face for irritation free results.

Combine all that with nano-polished blades that have been sharpened to a 30° knife’s edge and Panasonic claim it will give you the sharpest, closest, smoothest shave they have ever offered.  The extra-long battery in both models will give around 65 minutes shaving when used cordlessly and as far as I can make out the only difference between the two models are that the ES-RF41 comes with a charging stand and has five LED charge indicators, while the ES-RF31 has three LED charging indicators.

The retail price of the ES-RF41 is £169.99 and the ES-RF31 £149.99. Both models are available from John Lewis, www.amazon.co.uk, www.shavers.co.uk and Comet

Mu for Men – Organic Skincare

Posted on 29 September 2010 by Marc

If there’s one thing I’ve discovered over the years, it’s that not all skincare products are the same.  You’ve probably realised that too if you’ve ever used one product for a period of time and then tried something different, something that appears to be the same.  What makes a £2 moisturiser any different from a £30 moisturiser?  It’s the same thing that makes a £2 bottle of wine different from a £30 bottle; the quality of the ingredients and the manufacturing process.

Until recently neither Mr Black nor I had heard of organic skincare products but for the last few months I’ve been using a variety of products from the Mu for Men range by Essentially Yours (Mu is the far Eastern term for nothing). For a start all the items in the Mu for Men range are not only 100% organic they’re approved by both the Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society.  In addition, as they contain no animal ingredients or alcohol they are suitable for those following Halal.

Why is organic better for you and your skin?  Well, if you look at the ingredients in Gillette shave gel you’ll discover they include Polytetrafluoroethylene, this is the stuff that reduces the friction between blade and skin.  It’s also known as Teflon, that’s right, the stuff that coats your frying pan.  What about innocent sounding BHT? It’s better known as Butylated Hydroxytoluene and is used in jet fuels and embalming fluid. Those are just 2 of the ingredients found in a wide variety of popular products but how many of us have ever bothered to research what we’re putting on our skin?

Suddenly organic skincare products make perfect sense.  Take Mu for Men’s shave oil for instance, it only contains Sweet Almond Oil, Tea Tree oil, Cedarwood, Limonene and Linalool. Not much good for frying an egg but excellent for shaving your face!

The Mu for Men range is quite extensive so whether you’re looking for shave oil, a moisturiser, face scrub, face mask, face wash or eye firming serum you’ll find they have a 100% organic replacement for your current chemical product. Doesn’t your skin deserve chemical free?

I should also mention the Eucalyptus & Juniper Bath/Shower Gel from the Love Your Body range.  A little bit more expensive that your typical shower gel but for once I really did feel invigorated after using, it’s highly effective if you have a cold or flu as it’s decongestant properties will clear your airways in a jiffy.

You can purchase the entire Mu for Men range directly from the Essentially Yours website where you’ll also discover products for both children and women.

If you would like to win 75ml bottles of Mu for Men’s Pre-Shave Toner, Shave Oil and Facial Scrub (worth almost £40) just leave your answer to the following question as a comment before midnight (GMT) Sunday 17 October 2010.

Question: What is Mu the far Eastern term for?

A winner will be chosen at random from all the correct entries on Monday 18 October 2010. (Sorry, only open to entrants from within the UK)
