RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER 2

RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER 2

Posted on 17 December 2015 by Chris Ford

I’ve lost count now of the amount of films that have been made based around one event that happened down a dimly lit farm road in December 1995 but probably the best of them all was Rise of The Footsolider following the life of Essex hard man Carlton Leach played by the excellent Ricci Harnett.
We pick up the story with Carlton a shadow of his former self following the murder of three Essex gang members who were also his close friends. Self-medicating on drugs and booze to dull the pain – and amidst ongoing fears of further retribution – Carlton must nevertheless fight to regain his place in the criminal underworld until circumstances start against him.
Rise of the Footsolider might not have needed a sequel but for those of you like me that like this genre of movie it ticks all the boxes for a good night in front of the telly.

A Night with Affligem Beer and food Paired

AFFLIGEM_PANEL

A few weeks ago I was invited to a dinner hosted by Belgian beer brand Affligem pairing their beer with some fantastic food as part of their ongoing series of Society of Master Craftsman dinners.
The Idea of the dinners are serving a three-course meal using and paired with Affligem focusing on matching the tastes of the food on offer with the distinctive notes of the beer.

talbot

So we found ourselves in The Talbot, Brockley a part of London of London and pub I had never been to before but very glad we made the effort to visit such a beautiful location with warm and welcoming hosts.

Starter – Honey glazed smoked salmon and potato cakes

IMG_4933

Main – Duck breast with duck samosa and mash with red wine jus

IMG_0940

Dessert – Chocolate fondant

IMG_4935

The Beer
My Favourite of the Affigem range is no surprise to me I guess and the most accessible of Belgian beers in general is their Blonde style beer. A strong top-fermented beer, blond to amber in colour, with a beautiful balance between hops and malt. We sampled a range of Affligem beers though including Affligem Tripel, Affligem Dubbel all paired and used in the dishes by the chef to create a truly unique and delicious dinner for everyone.

As a lot of us are moving away from boring mass produced lager onto craft beers it seems the natural progression to me is to explore the wonderful complex beers Belgium has to offer and I can’t think of a better place to start than Affligem.

The Blues Brothers: Xmas Special , London

The Blues Brothers: Xmas Special , London

I think most of us remember fondly The Blues Brothers movie growing up with those songs even the most stubborn of musical hater can’t help but tap their feet to the movie and albums have been a massive success.
I guess the above describes me in a way, I love music and going to see bands but never been one to enjoy a musical as such so I went along to The Blues Brothers : Xmas Special knowing I liked the movie sitting in my armchair but would I like it in a theatre environment where ‘shudder’ people might be dancing! Well I need not have worried as the whole show from start to finish was non stop fun and good times, in fact as I looked around me I couldn’t see a face that didn’t have a smile on it and that says a lot I think.

Blues-Brother
So the Xmas show is slightly different from the film, while all the big songs from the movie are present a few other classic are thrown in as a welcome edition to add a bit of a Christmas tint to proceedings.
David Kristopher-Brown and Joshua Mumby as The Blues Brothers both do a mighty fine job with Mumby as Elwood adding some especially comedic moments that helped gel things together and give the evening that feel good vibe. In fact the whole cast were amazing from the backing band to the back-up singers, I do feel special mention should go T’Shan Williams who as one third of The Stax Sister gave an absolutely stunning performance that girl can sing!

If you are looking for something fun and different to do over the Christmas period I can thoroughly recommended The Blues Brothers: Xmas Special, you might even earn yourself a few brownie points with the girlfriend too !

I think I may be a theatre convert….

The Blues Brothers: Xmas Special is booking now until January 10th 2016 at the Arts Theatre, 6-7 Great Newport Street, London WC2 with tickets available here

Celebrate British Farming with Potato Vodka

Celebrate British Farming with Potato Vodka

Posted on 10 December 2015 by Chris Ford

Following a successful harvest, farmers around the country will be hard at work ensuring their crops are being transformed into profitable produce. And as competition rises across the country’s regions, farmers are getting more inventive with their crops to keep British farming going. One farm who has found their niche in the market is the Chase family farm in Herefordshire.

One Potato Two Book

Making vodka from potatoes, the Chase distillery is unique. Originally known for setting-up Tyrells crisps, the familyfarm sold the multi-million pound enterprise and turned their attention to alcohol. Making vodka from potato rather than grain, it is the only distillery of its kind in the UK and has been voted the World’s Best Vodka by the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition.

Brand Book Trio Gift Set & Logo

To celebrate its success, founder William Chase is releasing his first ever book ‘One Potato : Two’. Based on his upbringing, living the “good life” eating everything home-grown, he shares his journey on how potatoes have influenced his life, taking him from bankruptcy to selling his now global potato chips company and turning his hand to vodka. The book also features special cocktail recipes as well as acting as a handy business guide, making it keen reading for any budding entrepreneurs or alcohol connoisseurs.

For more information, please visit www.chasedistillery.co.uk

To mark the occasion, we are giving away a copy of the book and the Brand Book Trio gift set, allowing you the chance to try other signature spirits from the UK distillery.

What crop are the Chase family famous for farming?

  1. A) Grain
  2. B) Turnip
  3. C) Potato

send your answer to enterthecomp@gmail.com by the 21st December 2015 where one winner will be selected at random.  Good Luck!!

Five Ways To Kill Time

Five Ways To Kill Time

Posted on 08 December 2015 by Chris Ford

Whether you’re waiting for that hot girl from the gym to text you (not that you’re bothered, obviously…) or you’re just seriously trying to avoid that deadline looming at work, there are whole host of ways to procrastinate that you might not even have ever considered. Think putting stuff off is limited to mindlessly scrolling Facebook or binge watching Netflix? Think again!
1. Play Online Slots
Online gaming isn’t just reduced to Candy Crush and those other annoying Facebook games your family constantly invite you to. There are loads of different ones in the online casinos that can benefit you, too. There are loads of fun slots from 32Red so it will really feel like you’re at the arcade. If slots aren’t so much your thing, you can give the likes of Wow Bingo a go, for a different kind of online game, but you’ll find that if you want the best of both worlds, 32Red offers bingo as well.
2. Browse Online Shops
It’s not just for girls you know. There are seriously a whole ton of online stores which are bound to catch your eye. From the latest men’s fashion right through to tech and gadgets, there are absolutely loads of ways to blow some time (and cash…) on the internet.
3. Window Shop For Holidays
Whether you’ve got millions in the bank or nothing to your name, sometimes there’s nothing more exciting than a bit of wishful thinking when it comes to holidays.
Whether you’re just window shopping or actually planning a vacation, you can kill literally hours planning all the different places you could possibly go. The world is absolutely huge, and whether you want a party island, city break or a romantic getaway, there is tons you can do. You can even work away – plenty of people do small tasks for a place to stay, or travel for free (not that we are trying to convince you to do more than look…!).

4. Learn An Instrument
You know that old acoustic sitting in the corner of your room that you literally have never played and just have for show? Isn’t it time you did something about it? Everyone loves a musician and it’s a party piece that’s especially good to pull out at beach BBQs or basically anything during the summer. Just think, you could even join a band and tour the world… who knows? The world is your oyster.

by pmuellr
(Don’t blame us if the above fails!)
5. Learn To Cook
This isn’t synonymous with eating. Sure, stuffing your face will kill some time, but shoving a pizza into the oven doesn’t exactly make you a master chef. To sharpen those culinary skills requires quite a lot of time, but it pays off in the end.
Plenty of girls love a guy who can cook, and it can do wonders for the work you’re putting in at the gym if that’s your thing, too. After all, they say abs are made in the kitchen.

Meantimes London Born Harvest Gold Launches

Meantimes London Born Harvest Gold Launches

Posted on 08 December 2015 by Chris Ford

The Thames… Us Londoners know that it’s magnificent, historic, and well, just a bit smelly.
So it’s surprising to learn that it’s also sort of delicious.
Well it must be. The latest beer in London craft brewer Meantime’s family is brewed from hops grown on the river’s Greenwich Peninsula – and that tastes just great!
Planted last March, the summer weather lead to a bumper hop harvest and come September this year, they were added fresh (rather than dried), leading to a punchier, brighter flavour than the traditional method produces.
Rod Jones, Meantime brewer and Beer Sommelier of the Year 2015 got to work and produced Harvest Gold – a beer that is grown, brewed and enjoyed all within a one mile radius of the brewery.
Always keen to be a guinea pig when it comes to new beer, I was lucky enough to be one of the first to sup this year’s batch.

IMG_20151124_195840

Meantime’s Harvest Gold is well-balanced and crisp, with a lovely sweet maltiness certainly not a massive hop fest but brought out some subtle fruity flavours that were very enjoyable and different.

IMG_5001

One of the most distinctive things about Meantime are its roots in SE10, and it’s great to see that this London brewery is still thinking local even after a stratospheric rise in popularity in recent times – as well as the takeover earlier this year by multi-national brewers SAB Miller.
And if you want to try some Harvest Gold, you’ll have to think local too, and get yourself down to the Meantime Brewery Tasting Rooms (or shop online!)
This is a limited edition beer. Get it before it’s all gone!
